Centre for Modeling and Simulation
University of Pune All Models Are False, Some Are Useful

About the Centre

The Centre for Modeling and Simulation, University of Pune, was established in 2003 with a vision to promote awareness about mathematical modeling and simulation methodologies, to encourage highly interdisciplinary problem-centric approaches to basic and applied research that transcend traditional boundaries separating individual scientific disciplines, and to nurture high-performance computing expertise on the University campus.

Research

Collective Expertise. Collectively, the Centre possesses expertise in the areas of mathematical physics, computational physics, materials modeling, complex systems, applied statistical data modeling and analysis, scientific computing, and large-scale numerics.

Research Focus Areas. Research focus areas that have emerged since the Centre's inception include materials modeling, modeling of complex and nonlinear systems, and computational/systems biology. An outline of research at the Centre can be found in this presentation about the Centre [532K PDF] .

Individual Research Interests. Individual expertise and research interests of the Centre's faculty vary. Individual faculty profiles can be found in a prior-year brochure [253K pdf][464K ps.gz] (mostly outdated now), in a comprehensive report about the Centre, or on individual faculty webpages accessible from the people page.

See Also: Our Technical Reports Page.

The Centre strongly encourages applied research and, in particular, cross-disciplinary and industrial research collaborations.

Outreach

For the Campus. The Centre manages and maintains a number of state-of-the-art high-performance computing (HPC) machines as a HPC facility for the entire campus research community. All courses that are part of the Centre's academic programmes are open to the campus community under the University credit system.

For the Public. The Centre organizes an on-going series of colloquia and seminars by distinguished researchers from academics and industry so as to generate awareness and perspective on modeling and simulation methodologies used to solve challenging real-life industrial/technological or scientific problems. This activity also serves as a supplement to the Centre's academic programme. Details of past and planned colloquia can be found on our announcements pages.

The Centre welcomes suggestions and proposed collaborations in this area as well.

We Seek Your Participation in the Centre's Activities

As Research Collaborator. Whether you are in academics or in industry, we welcome proposals for collaborative research on topics of mutual interest and in areas of expertise available with the Centre.

As Visiting/Guest Faculty. We welcome your participation as visiting/guest faculty in teaching specialized topics related to modeling and simulation.

As Advisor in Our On-Going Curriculum Revision Process. As an expert in your specialty that uses modeling, simulation and computation as a methodology, we welcome your participation in our on-going curriculum design and revision process.

As Project Advisor for Our Students. Substantial, hands-on projects are an integral part of all our academic programmes. Our students take up projects in academics or industry, depending on their interests and inclinations. We welcome your participation as a student project advisor.

As Potential Employer for Our Students. The Centre is aware that the success of its academic programme depends on the placement record of its students. If you are in search for manpower trained in applied mathematics, applied statistics, scientific computing, modeling and simulation, we welcome your initiative, help, and support in our placement activities.
