Computational Materials Science and Materials Modeling
Centre has an active research programme in computational materials science. Using the state-of-the-art techniques, electronic and atomistic properties are investigated to gain macroscopic insights from microscopic point-of-view. From graphene to quantum dots and from semiconductors to random alloys, the members of this group have a long history of working at the cutting edge of materials science.

Digital Signal and Image Processing
We have undertaken projects in digital processing to address the need of automated identification of voice, gender, features, handwriting recognition for use in congitive detection systems. These systems are typically useful in applications related to robotics and security. Currently two problems are being investigated: (1) automated gender recognition from facial photographs and (2) speaker identification for the captured voice recording.

We are working on identifying appropriate mathematical (such as transforms) and algorithmic models for high suceess rates in such detections. We intend to use the available IT resources like database, high speed network cconnectivity, high performance computing etc. to enhance the capabilities of these applications.

One more research project to measure security strength cryptographic keys (in terms of time for breaking) using discrete mathematics and boolean satisfiability is underway in collaboration with Dr. Smita Bedekar, ISSC.

Industrial and Applied Mathematics
We have undertaken research work in specialized areas of application of modeling in engineering and science. The engineering modeling work carried out could be further classified to be design of processing devices (in microfluidics) and materials synthesis processes (electrophoretic deposition). The science applications could be likewise grouped as dynamical systems studies (coupled map lattices) and statistical dynamics (stochastic gravity).

The mathematical techniques we employ for applications as above have been our core scholastic interest and we view our research work in relation to this interest. This has enabled us to address diverse specialized topics ranging from computational fluid and structural dynamics to applied statistics in engineering and stochastic methods in basic sciences. The picture on the side shows instabilities in a fluid flow and vortices that result. This and similar instabilities are studied by students of computational fluid dynamics at the Centre as a part of their coursework. The level of focus required to carry out research in specialized areas and disseminate the results to the concerned research community is a challenge which we train our students to tackle.

Modeling complex engineering systems has emerged to be the main research interest of our group. We specifically consider those opportunities which offer scope for model validation in terms of available testing and experimentation facilities in India.
